NIGERIA: THE YOUNG GIRLS HAVE BEEN RELEASED.
In the heart of each of the young women we could guess this prayer. Prayer that has come true, because the 279 students from GGSS Jangebee High School in Zamfara State, northwestern Nigeria, have been released, after a week of kidnapping.
Pope Francis had made an urgent appeal for her release: “I join my voice to that of the Nigerian bishops in condemning the vile kidnapping of 317 female students, ripped from their school, in Jangebe, in the north-west of the country. I pray for these girls, so that they can return home soon. I am close to their families and to them. Let us pray to Our Lady to protect them”, the Holy Father had said.
This appeal from Pope Francis has been very well received in Nigeria. First, because the Holy Father has asked for the release of the girls. Second, because we realize that voices from outside are needed for people to understand what is happening in Nigeria.
The kidnapping has ended happily, with all the young women returning home safely. But the violent environment of the country has not been solved, and as long as this persists, young people and children will not be protected.
