THE SPIRIT WAS AMONG US.

POTOSI (BOLIVIA)

Walking through the center of the city is to verify the wealth that the Cerro Rico has produced in the five centuries of mining. The churches reveal it in the fronts, paintings, coffered ceilings and portals, as an expression of the craftsmanship and architectural work of the time. The goldsmith school exhibits numerous silver pieces made with various techniques. The frames of paintings and canvases are often decorated with gold leaf.

The visit to the Imperial Villa constituted for us a beautiful and deep artistic tour, although history reveals the other side of the coin: in the mining of Cerro Rico, more than eight million people lost their lives, in addition, this industry It took place in situations of labor exploitation that caused illness and death. Not to mention the metallurgical techniques that leave the land and the waterways polluted and unusable for agricultural, animal and human consumption.

This is the framework in which the evangelization of Potosí was developed. And in this paradoxical and complex world, our community inserted itself, wishing to respond to job insecurity, insufficient health and hygiene, the necessary educational support for children and evangelization for families.

The building bears witness to this: showers and a medical dispensary, textile workshops, a library and the vice-parish of San Gerardo. This is part of what we found in the canonical visit to this community, carried out from August 16 to 20, by the superior general, Mother Ma. Joaquina Lozano, accompanied by her counselor, H. Alejandra González. In these days, we find ourselves with a mature parish community. Made up of men and women in love with Christ and committed to the Church. Each one with a different ministry, but a common desire: to walk together and spread the gospel to more people. Not only did we have a festive moment with them, but we were privileged witnesses of dialogues about their certainties, concerns and searches. We had no doubt: the Spirit that makes community was among us. The M. General encouraged them to take steps in their ecclesial commitment as an expression of their faith.
