The demand of 116 Catholic universities in Latin America to Daniel Ortega.
The confiscation of property, the expulsion of the Jesuits from their residence in Villa del Carmen, the change of name of the university and the imposition of a de facto directive have been the arbitrary measures taken by Daniel Ortega’s regime against the Central American University (UCA) in Managua.
The Organisation of Catholic Universities of Latin America and the Caribbean (Oducal) recalled that the UCA “is a Catholic institution of the Society of Jesus with more than 60 years of history that has made a great contribution through its teaching, research and enormous public advocacy, insistently and courageously seeking peace and justice in Nicaragua”.
We also express our solidarity with the Society of Jesus in the face of this arbitrary act by the Ortega government, which takes place in a context of persecution against twenty-six higher education institutions whose assets were previously confiscated. We express our wish that “truth, justice, dialogue and the defence of academic freedom will prevail”, knowing that the benefit of education is not the educators, but the people, in this case the Nicaraguan people, who are deprived of an academic education of excellence.https://oducal.com/web/presente/noticias/declaracion-de-la-oducal-sobre-la-situacion-de-la-universidad-centroamericana-de-nicaragua-uca/noticia
